Free shipping vs calculated shipping on eBay
On eBay, free shipping and calculated shipping net the same on one sale when the buyer pays the same total, because eBay charges its final value fee on the shipping the buyer pays. The real differences are who carries the label risk and how buyers react.

Calculated shipping is eBay's option that charges each buyer the carrier rate to their address, worked out from the package weight, dimensions and service in your listing. Free shipping puts the label cost inside your item price. Flat rate charges every buyer the same amount. As of September 2026, eBay requires package weight and dimensions for calculated shipping, per its shipping options help.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. eBay's final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale plus a per-order fee, and that total includes any shipping and handling the buyer pays, and sales tax. The per-order fee is $0.30 for orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above $10, per eBay's selling fees page, checked September 23, 2026.
One exception: if you offer a cheaper or free domestic option alongside faster or international shipping, eBay figures the total on the cheapest domestic option you offer.
| Buyer pays shipping | Free shipping | |
|---|---|---|
| Item price | $40.00 | $48.00 |
| Shipping charged | $8.00 | $0.00 |
| Buyer pays, before tax | $48.00 | $48.00 |
| Fee at an example 13% plus $0.40 | $6.64 | $6.64 |
| Label cost | $8.00 | $8.00 |
| Left before item cost | $33.36 | $33.36 |
The 13% is an example, not your category's rate. Check eBay's fee page for yours. Sales tax is left out because it's the same both ways.
The two columns match because the fee base is the same $48. So the question isn't which is cheaper. It's which one sells more, and who pays when a label costs more than you planned.
Does free shipping help you sell on eBay?
eBay says it does. eBay's Seller Center says buyers are more likely to choose an item with free shipping over one with a shipping fee, even when the total cost is the same. eBay also adds a “Free shipping” message to listings that meet several conditions, including:
- You and the buyer are both in the 48 contiguous US states.
- eBay can estimate delivery in 4 business days or less, from your handling time, service and the two addresses.
- Free shipping is your first, default option.
What eBay doesn't say: its Best Match page doesn't list free shipping as a ranking factor. It lists the item price and listing terms such as your return policy and handling time among its factors, and tells sellers to offer “reasonable shipping.” Sources: eBay's delivery date help, shipping fees help and Best Match page, checked September 23, 2026.
When does calculated shipping win?
A rule of thumb: calculated shipping wins on eBay when the label price swings a lot with distance, which is the case for heavy, bulky and oddly sized items. It loses on cheap, light items, where any shipping charge looks big next to the price. Free shipping works best when the label cost is small and predictable.
- Heavy or bulky items. Distance swings the label price hard. At USPS commercial prices from July 12, 2026, the same 20-pound box costs $16.46 to Zone 1 and $40.39 to Zone 8. With free shipping, the item price has to cover that Zone 8 label, or far-away buyers cost you money.
- Items where you can't predict the box. Calculated shipping passes the real rate to the buyer, as long as the weight and dimensions you enter are right.
- Low-price items with cheap shipping. Free shipping still wins here, because a shipping charge is a big share of a small total.
How do you decide between free and calculated shipping?
Decide between free and calculated shipping on eBay one category at a time, because label costs cluster by item type. A category of light clothing ships very differently from one of cast-iron cookware. Run these four steps for each category you sell in:
- Find your worst realistic label costNot the average. The cost to your farthest common buyer, at the billable weight including any dimensional weight.
- Add it to your target item priceThat's your free-shipping price. If it looks high against sold listings, free shipping is wrong for this category.
- Compare totals, not item pricesBuyers compare what they pay in total. A higher price with free shipping and a lower price plus shipping are the same purchase.
- Pick one approach per category and stick to itMixing them inside a category makes your own pricing mistakes hard to spot.
Two more eBay rules touch shipping price. eBay lets you build insurance into your shipping charge but not bill it as a separate fee, per its tracking help. And a buyer's calculated rate depends on the service you offer, so offering Priority Mail when Ground Advantage would do raises the price the buyer sees. The discounted-rates warning above comes from eBay's shipping discounts help.
Where does the shipping number in a listing come from?
The shipping number in a listing comes from the weight, box size and service you put in it. Two separate steps touch every order. The listing sets what the buyer pays, and eBay's calculator prices that from the listing. The label sets what you pay, and eBay Labels, a label seller such as Pirate Ship, or the post office counter prices that from the same box when you ship. Put the listing numbers too low and the gap comes out of your margin on every sale.
FlowLister, which the team behind this site makes, works on the listing side. It writes the shipping into the listing along with the title, item specifics and a price from sold listings, all from your photos. It's AI and it misses things, so weigh and measure the packed box before you rely on any shipping number, ours included.
